چکیده

The bread wheat genome harbors three homoeologs of the barley gene HvAP2, which determines the cleistogamous/non-cleistogamous flowering. The three homoeologs, TaAP2-A, TaAP2-B and TaAP2-D, are derived from the A, B and D genomes. The importance of lodicule swelling in assuring non-cleistogamous flowering in a range of wild and domesticated wheat accessions of varying ploidy level was established. Re-sequencing of wheat AP2 homoeologous genes was carried out to identify natural variation at both the nucleotide and polypeptide level. The sequences of wheat AP2 homoeologs are highly conserved even across different ploidy levels and no functional variants at the key miR172 targeting site were detected. These results indicate that engineering of cleistogamous wheat will require the presence of a functional TaAP2 modification at each of the three homoeologs.

Evaluation of gene expression changes of miR156 and miR172 and their targeted genes (AP2 & SPL3; vernalization factors) in two bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars

Floral transition through vernalization has a large influence on cold tolerance and agronomic traits in winter cereals. It is now apparent that in many plants small RNAs play critical roles in determination of the flowering time. There is evidence suggesting that the miR156 and miR172 families play a key role in the flowering transition of plants. In this study, the expression of two temporally ...

Overexpression of Three TaEXPA1 Homoeologous Genes with Distinct Expression Divergence in Hexaploid Wheat Exhibit Functional Retention in Arabidopsis

Common wheat is a hexaploid species with most of the genes present as triplicate homoeologs. Expression divergences of homoeologs are frequently observed in wheat as well as in other polyploid plants. However, little is known about functional variances among homologous genes arising from polyploidy. Expansins play diverse roles in plant developmental processes related to the action of cell wall...

Genetic and epigenetic alteration among three homoeologous genes of a class E MADS box gene in hexaploid wheat.

Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) is a hexaploid species with A, B, and D ancestral genomes. Most bread wheat genes are present in the genome as triplicated homoeologous genes (homoeologs) derived from the ancestral species. Here, we report that both genetic and epigenetic alterations have occurred in the homoeologs of a wheat class E MADS box gene. Two class E genes are identified in wheat, whea...

Functional Conservation and Divergence among Homoeologs of TaSPL20 and TaSPL21, Two SBP-Box Genes Governing Yield-Related Traits in Hexaploid Wheat.

Maintaining high and stable yields has become an increasing challenge in wheat breeding due to climate change. Although Squamosa-promoter binding protein (SBP)-box genes have important roles in plant development, very little is known about the actual biological functions of wheat SBP-box family members. Here, we dissect the functional conservation, divergence, and exploitation of homoeologs of ...

Genomic shock induced genetic and epigenetic changes in homoeologs of class ABCDE MADS-box genes in hexaploid wheat

Polyploidy, the duplication of a single genome (autopolyploid) or the combination of two or more divergent genomes (allopolyploid), has occurred frequently during the evolutionary history of flowering plants . It is known that the polyploid genome displays dynamic changes in DNA sequences and gene expression patterns, which are caused by “genomic shock” . Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) is a he...
